Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
