British Broadcasting Corporation Gaza Programme Deemed a 'Serious' Breach of Media Standards, Says UK Media Regulator

The British broadcaster engaged in a "serious breach" of industry standards by not revealing that the narrator of a film about Gaza was the offspring of a Hamas representative, according to regulatory body Ofcom.

An investigation by Ofcom into Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has determined that the film was "substantially inaccurate".

The head of the BBC had already issued an apology, saying there had been "a major oversight in relation to factual correctness".

The authority has ordered the BBC to broadcast a evening announcement about its decisions.

"Given this constitutes a serious breach of our regulations, we are ordering the corporation to air a message of our conclusions against it on the BBC's second channel at 9pm, with a timing to be finalised," the statement read.

'Possibility to Undermine Credibility'

The watchdog's statement stated: "The inquiry we conducted found that the programme's omission to reveal that the presenter's father held a post in the Hamas-run authority was significantly deceptive.

"Consequently that the public did not have essential details which may have been very significant to their assessment of the presenter and the details he shared.

"Trust is at the core of the bond between a media organization and its audience, particularly for a state-funded media outlet such as the public broadcaster.

"This error had the possibility to undermine the exceptionally strong amounts of confidence that audiences would have put in a factual film from the broadcaster about the Israel-Gaza war."

The film was removed from the online platform in February after the narrator's family links came to light, and in July an broadcaster's internal assessment determined it infringed the corporation's journalistic standards on accuracy.

A corporation official stated: "The authority's determination is in agreement with the results of the corporation's inquiry, that there was a major oversight in the film in relation to the BBC's Editorial Guidelines on accuracy, which corresponds to regulation 2.2 of the authority's broadcasting regulations.

"We issued an apology for this and we accept the authority's determination in its entirety. We will adhere to the directive as soon as the timing and language are finalised."
