RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several approach shafts leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
