European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
