Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
