Lifetime of Earnings Insufficient for UK Labor Force to Join Richest 10%, Report Says

Based on fresh research, the typical earner in the UK would need half a century of income to attain the wealth level of the most affluent 10% of the population.

Expanding Wealth Gap Over Time

This research reviewed net worth information including the recent health crisis years and discovered that in 2006-08, it would have taken nearly four decades of typical employment income to join the top 10th of the wealth distribution.

A senior economist associated with the study commented: "Economic disparities in Britain are currently so significant that a typical full-time employee saving all their earnings across their entire working life would remain unable to reach the top of the economic scale."

Measuring the Wealth Divide

The research found that the difference between the net worth of the typical individual and a person belonging to the wealthiest decile was one million pounds in the pre-crisis period, but had increased to £1.3 million in actual value by recent times.

The researcher added: "These gaps are doubly concerning as economic movement in Britain is limited – those who commence life well-off tend to continue being rich, and vice versa."

Comparative Financial Divide

Despite the financial disparity expanding in absolute terms, the portion of complete net worth in the UK possessed by the wealthiest families – known as "proportional economic disparity" – has been "mostly consistent since the eighties," per the study.

During this period, total wealth in the UK increased dramatically from triple the gross domestic product, to almost 7.5 times.

Factors of Economic Disparity

So-called "passive" gains, through growing real estate costs and adjustments to retirement fund assessments, were the main drivers of the widening wealth gap since 2010, according to the report.

These gains tended to accrue to elderly homeowners, the study demonstrates – exacerbating the generational financial disparity.

Generational Economic Gaps

The typical financial disparity between individuals aged 30-34 and those in their early 60s grew by more than 100% in real terms, from 135 thousand pounds in the mid-2000s, to £310k.

Area-Based Disparities

Additionally, there were pronounced area-based disparities, with the typical amount of wealth in recent years reaching 290 thousand pounds in the SE of England, where property prices have generally grown substantially, compared with £110,000 in the north-east.

Health Crisis Years Consequences

Amid the health crisis, when countless laborers were covered under the government-supported job retention program, and health crisis restrictions limited opportunities for spending, the data shows countless homes were in a position to set aside money, increasing their wealth.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, though. "The typical family in the poorest fifth saw their cash reserves increase by just £80 during the COVID years (from 2019 to 2022), broadly the same as the 24 months before COVID. Conversely, the median home in the wealthiest fifth saw their liquid savings grow by 4,200 pounds," the analysis concludes.
