Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to question particular calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
